Greek Hellenistic Bronze Herakles Roundel. Portrait of a ruler.
2nd century BC.
H. 7cm. (2 ?¾ in.).
Missing inlayed eyes, otherwise perfect. Fine dark green patina.
Ex. German privet collection 1990's.
The bust of Herakles with the head turned to the left, adorned with a wreath of ivy leaves, with the straps falling on his shoulders. The Nemean lion skin legs are falling from the shoulders and tied in “Herakles Tie” over his chest.
The head is modeled with characteristics of a portrait, possibly of a Ptolemaic king.
