Early Christian bronze censer with Christological scenes
Early Byzantine Period: 5th - 7th century AD

The solid cast bronze censer (-incense burner) of hemispherical form on conical foot, a cylindrical rim with three projections designed as “fleur de lily” with suspension holes for chain, (small part of the chain remained joint to one of the projections). The rim and base are incised with floral motives.
The body with relief depicting scenes from the life of Christ, related to the sacred places in the Holyland: Annunciation (-Nazareth), Nativity (-Bethlehem), Baptism (-Jordan river), Crucifixion and Anesthasy – Resurrection (-Jerusalem). A cross surmounting the Holy Sepulcher, in the Anesthasy – Resurrection scene. The depiction is in high relief, with incised details, in typical Early Byzantine conceptual iconography and style.
